My Email is Blocked. What Now?

I am often asked this question by Email Marketers after the most crucial campaign of the year ends up sitting in the bulk folder at a big ISP.  It’s a great question to ask, but the better question to ask comes long before that happens.  The question that I love to hear is something along these lines.  I’m starting my email marketing program, and I want to make sure I don’t end up in a bulk or spam folder.  Marketers who ask these questions up-front have an astronomical rate of success compared to those after-the-fact guys.  The good news is that even if we’re talking after your campaign gets trashed and management wants to know where all the email mojo went, there is still hope.

Deliverability and Comcast

Comcast has made some important changes today that mailers should be aware of.

Today Comcast announced that they’ve recently instituted a global throttling policy that rate limits inbound mail to 6 recipients per second from a single IP address, regardless of the number of domains sending from that IP.

If you suspect this is affecting you, look for a 4xx error message (temp-fail) during the SMTP transaction. If the rate-limit is impacting your ability to deliver mail, adjusting your server’s delivery settings to ensure a less than 6 recipient per second rate of delivery should resolve the issue. You can find more detailed information on Comcast’s website.

Multi-channel Notifications – is a single modality of communication enough these days?

As demands in the marketplace have evolved and as the adoption of new technologies has changed, presenting notification and reminders to users in a multi-modal fashion is a requirement. A recipient may not be in front of their email or have access to their fax machine. They may be in a meeting and cannot check their voice messages. To deliver an effective communication you need multiple ways to deliver that notification, escalating procedures for sending the reminder whenever a recipient cannot be reached, and opt-in/-out opportunity for the recipient.

The past couple of weeks have brought about a flurry of changes in the Deliverability Industry.  Here are some things you should be aware of:

Changes to AOL White List

AOL is making a few changes to their whitelist - to the point where calling it a whitelist is probably a misnomer going forward. AOL indicates that in the future, the “whitelisting” process is simply a way for a mailer to introduce themselves to AOL and let AOL know a little about what kind of mail they are sending. AOL will want to know:

This past Monday I rushed home from a long day at the office, cracked open a beer and settled in for the BCS National Championship game between Ohio State and LSU. I already knew that speedy and strong LSU would wipe the field with the Buckeyes, but it was the last game of the year (that mattered) and I was going to enjoy it.

As the game went on and commercial breaks began to run, I noticed several commericals for upcoming movie releases. Two inparticular stick in my mind for different reasons.

What a Year!

What a year! On top of an impossible-to-navigate tape, there was so much news to digest on the political, economic and financial fronts (and celebrity, too – let’s not forget the train wreck that is Britney Spears…) that it was tough to find a moment to write.

It was a great year for Premiere Global Services – probably the best in my near five-year tenure. Let me highlight a few of what I believe are our most significant accomplishments. (I’ll save the good news on our stock performance for last, though I must admit that it’s killing me to wait!)
