CAN-SPAM Prosecutions

A news item last week that seemed to go somewhat under the radar, but is a significant development.  The DOJ is prosecuting a team of spammers responsible for the delivery of billions of penny-stock related spam email.

Kenneth Corbin of Internetnews.com has a great explanation.  Check it out here.

Five prolific spammers today pleaded guilty to violating the CAN-SPAM Act in a federal court in Detroit in a case that took down a massive stock fraud operation, marking the Justice Department’s largest-ever prosecution under the 2003 statute.

I wanted to repost this entry from earlier this year.  This Thursday’s webinar “The Myth of 100% Deliverability” is absed on this article.  Please sign-up if you haven’t done so yet.  You will learn some of the tricks and secrets that you hear about from some email senders.  I hope you enjoy this article if you didn’t catch it the first time, it is my favorite.

SORBS DNSBL possible changes

The SORBS DNSBL is one that we get questions about quite often.  This list has always generated quite a bit of debate in the Deliverability world.  The fact that removal from the list comes with a fee has been something of a question.  Well, it seems there may possibly be some changes afoot at the SORBS list.  We’ll reserve judgement until we get more details.  Here is the message posted on the SORBS website.  Stay tuned for any new developments.

It comes with great sadness that I have to announce the imminent closure of SORBS. The University of Queensland have decided not to honor their agreement with myself and SORBS and terminate the hosting contract.

Crossing the Transactional Email Line

I received this email in my inbox last week from a Courtyard by Marriott Account Executive. Normally this wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary for me. I travel quite a bit, and I frequent a lot of the same places. I’d say it’s in the best interest of these establishments to throw a little love to frequent travelers. I believe this email was sent with good intentions, but it had some issues that threw up some big alarm bells.  I have protected the well intentioned with some strategically placed ink.

High Bounce Rate at Yahoo This Week

This week we’ve seen a high number of IP blocks from Yahoo which erroneously identify IP’s as being blocked by Spamhaus. This happened over the course of the week. Yahoo announced yesterday afternoon that they had resolved this issue. The IP’s were not blocked by Spamhaus (which would be really bad!!) this was a false error. You will most likely see some negative impact on your Deliverability numbers for the last week. Here was the original Yahoo acknowledgement of the problem.

Hello,

Improving the Email Sign-Up Process

I signed up to receive email from a popular Party store here in my area.  We visit this store a few times a year as we plan for the kids birthday parties etc…  We’re active in the local PTA as well, so it always seems like we need to pick up something for some type of get-together.  We like the store very much, they seem to always have what we need.  I do wish they could reach out to us proactively with sales, as we don’t go to the store unless we are already shopping for something specific.  It would be great to know when we could go stock up on some of these party items.

I finished up an interesting book over the weekend written by Seth Godin called “the dip.”  It’s a short book of about 80 pages.  The content in the book was so powerful that I read through it twice.  The concepts apply to so many of us in the email marketing world.  I was struck by the way so many of us sell our programs, products, or expertise short.

Do you consider yourself an Email Professional?

I am sitting in some great meetings today talking a lot about the future of our industry and products.  We’ve had some great discussions about who does what in an email marketing organization.  I admit as someone who has been fully engaged in the email world for more than a decade (wow) that I am probably a bit more interested in email than about 99.9% of people in the world.  If you are reading my blog you are more than likely someone in your organization who is involved in the process.  My question for you today, is a simple one that may not be so simple.

Live Email Marketing Deliverability Chat

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I will be hosting a live Email Deliverability chat this Thursday, April 23rd at 1:00 CST. During this time we’ll be answering all of your Deliverability questions. Please send in questions in advance to Kevin Senne to ensure they get answered during the chat. This is the second in a series of chat sessions I am hosting. We had a lot of great questions and conversation in our last session. I expect we will talk more about our very popular blog post from last week. I had the opportunity to speak with many of you about this post and some of the unspoken rules in Deliverability.
