If you think you have a lot of meetings, talk to Google VP of Search Products, Marissa Mayer. She’s in over 70 meeting every week. Yet, she credits her meeting structure for leading to some of Google’s most innovative ideas.
In a recent BusinessWeek article (“How to run a meeting like Google“), Mayer lists her six steps to running successful meetings:
1. Set a firm agenda
2. Take notes
3. Carve out micro-meetings
4. Hold office hours (me: great idea for hard to reach executives)
5. Discourage politics, use data
6. Stick to the clock

In anticipation of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, ComputerWorld Australia has launched a series of articles, investigating the use of information and communication technologies as a way to help reduce our worldwide carbon emissions. In the last of their series, Copenhagen countdown, they explore ways in which conferencing can reduce green house gas emissions.

In my last blog entry, I discussed using web conferencing during the interview process. It may make some people a bit uncomfortable, but it is a work related activity. What about watching a funeral online?
If that sounds weird, you might be surprised to hear that it’s already happening. Early this year ABC News ran an article “Web Grief: Funeral Webcasts Gain in Popularity.” On the one hand, the idea of a soldier overseas being able to participate in a family funeral sounds like a good idea. But what’s next? Skipping a local funeral so you can watch the webcast while checking your email and eating lunch?

First thing’s first… Our CMO, Jackie Yeaney, posted this fantastic blog post on Fast Company, and I couldn’t agree more. All signs for me point to Meeting Maestro. Have you figured out what kind of meeting personality you are?

Do you love meetings? I love meetings. Let me tell you why.
- I live in San Francisco. My teams are in Georgia, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, New Jersey, and all over Europe and Asia Pac. Virtual communication – email, chat, sms, web and audio meetings are my primary form of communication with my peers.

It seems everyone is talking about it – H1N1. Daycares, schools and companies of all sizes have planned how they’ll keep a workforce together during a pandemic. Although reports of how severe it is vary widely, one thing is certain – the virus is widespread. Even obsessive use of hand sanitizer didn’t spare me from its reach.

Maria Shriver was busted by some photogs talking on her cell phone while driving in California a few weeks ago!
Ironic, of course, since her husband signed the state law proclaiming this practice illegal. I’m sure Maria was in the hot seat at home with her husband and her kids after this little incident.
In case there are any more Marias out there, I wanted to share this quick and painless way to connect to a conference call while on your mobile phone. We share this little trick with our customers because we know that its a wireless world. Whether you are telecommuting, working flex hours, or collaborating with other time zones – our mobile devices are connecting us to conference calls and meetings.

In my last post I wrote about how the daily commute not only wastes more than 100 hours of the average American’s year, but often creates stress that spills over at home.
I don’t know about you, but I despise waiting in line, especially when what I’m waiting in line for is a big, steaming bowl of more stress. Isn’t there something better we can do with our time?
Luckily, online meeting and conferencing technology is now letting thousands of workers, including yours truly, avoid the rush hour and the stress that accompanies it. Even working from home one day a week makes a big impact in my quality of life. It’s not bad for the environment either.

For my next series of blog entries, I’m going to cover some new and sometimes controversial uses of online meeting technology. I’d love to hear your feedback on how you feel about these new applications of technology.
A recent article in Time magazine covers a new trend in hiring – webcam interviews. Hiring managers claim it saves time and money when vetting a large number of candidates for a job. Job seekers feel it allows them to cast a wider geographical net when seeking positions in this tough economy.
What do you think? Have you either interviewed or been interviewed via webcam? I say “Thumbs Up”- what about you?

In 2005 it was reported that the average American spends over 100 hours in traffic delays every year. That’s more than the average two weeks (80 hours) of vacation most workers take each year.
A recent study in the New York Times shows the effects of this burnout and how it can spill over at home in the form of arguments, stress, and bad moods.
Time is the most precious commodity, isn’t it? Think what you would do if you could have that 100 hours back. Or even if you could simply avoid the burnout associated with the “rat race” commute. Could you spend more time with your family? Could you perform better at your job?
