First thing’s first… Our CMO, Jackie Yeaney, posted this fantastic blog post on Fast Company, and I couldn’t agree more. All signs for me point to Meeting Maestro. Have you figured out what kind of meeting personality you are?

We’re getting a lot of mileage around here with this blog post! Read what our CMO Jackie Yeaney has to say about some popular ‘meeting personalities’.
Millions of us sit on conference calls and web meetings each day. Let us know if you recognize yourself, or your boss.
[Full disclosure: I am a combo socializer/multi-tasker/time-keeper/maestro!]

Maria Shriver was busted by some photogs talking on her cell phone while driving in California a few weeks ago!
Ironic, of course, since her husband signed the state law proclaiming this practice illegal. I’m sure Maria was in the hot seat at home with her husband and her kids after this little incident.
In case there are any more Marias out there, I wanted to share this quick and painless way to connect to a conference call while on your mobile phone. We share this little trick with our customers because we know that its a wireless world. Whether you are telecommuting, working flex hours, or collaborating with other time zones – our mobile devices are connecting us to conference calls and meetings.

In my last post I wrote about how the daily commute not only wastes more than 100 hours of the average American’s year, but often creates stress that spills over at home.
I don’t know about you, but I despise waiting in line, especially when what I’m waiting in line for is a big, steaming bowl of more stress. Isn’t there something better we can do with our time?
Luckily, online meeting and conferencing technology is now letting thousands of workers, including yours truly, avoid the rush hour and the stress that accompanies it. Even working from home one day a week makes a big impact in my quality of life. It’s not bad for the environment either.

What gets hundrends, sometimes thousands of references on Twitter each day?
No it’s not the latest badly behaving Hollywood celeb, it’s actually the conference call.
That’s right, hundreds of people tweeting various reactions to the very conference calls that they are attending. Here’s a quick sampling (names removed to protect the innocent):
- “just spent 70 minutes attending a webinar/conference call from my living room couch. Glad it’s over cause my cell phone is about to die!”
- “one conference call standing between me and the weekend”
- “These late night rehearsals are no good. What say we stay home & rehearse via conference call?”

We’ve all had some awkward, strange or just funny things happen during conference calls. I remember a conference call from many years ago when I answered a call on my cell phone from my mother. I proceeded to ask my mom (loudly) why she kept calling me when she knew I was at work! Of course, I had not muted the line – and everyone heard me! Oops!

Last summer, while teaching in South Africa, I learned a valuable lesson in cultural etiquette which translates even to the conferencing world. Using the taxis for transport was quite an experience – packed like a sardine in a speeding van which never stops, even for loading and unloading passengers. After getting out to let an older woman exit, I hopped back in and shut the door. Now, “shutting” the door, as I am used to, is perceived as an insuting door slam in African culture. Luckily, I played my ‘unknowing American’ card with a smile and wasn’t kicked off by the glaring driver.

Whether you’re organizing a happy hour or work meeting, scheduling across multiple time zones can be tough. Calendar programs like Outlook can show you when folks are available, but not whether it’s the middle of the night in their respective countries.
The PGi Global Meeting Planner makes it easy. Simply select a country or region for all of your participants to view the time locally to you and them. That way, you can make sure that your colleagues in Asia aren’t getting ready for bed during your proposed meeting time.

Picture this:
You’ve dialed into a conference call, one of several
other remote participants brought into a meeting occurring onsite for
10 other folks gathered around a speakerphone in the middle of a
conference room. You’d love to hear what is being said, but between
the scooting of the speakerphone, the unwrapping of the muffin you
AREN’T eating, and the five or six simultaneous sidebar conversations
occurring, you can’t hear the speaker!
Does this sound familiar? After
enough of these meetings, I decided to be the host who
prevents this type of meeting. I’ve started
considering the room where I’m speaking, and
not just the content or agenda.

The other day, I flew on my first Delta flight where Wi-Fi was offered. After just a few clicks I was online, right in seat 35C. Within moments I was checking Facebook and sending IMs to my friends.
As more airlines enter the era of sky-high Wi-Fi, I began wondering what this might mean for our customers. Beyond checking e-mail and surfing the web, flyers are now able to connect to meetings – even at 30,000 feet!
