In anticipation of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, ComputerWorld Australia has launched a series of articles, investigating the use of information and communication technologies as a way to help reduce our worldwide carbon emissions. In the last of their series, Copenhagen countdown, they explore ways in which conferencing can reduce green house gas emissions.

Maria Shriver was busted by some photogs talking on her cell phone while driving in California a few weeks ago!

Ironic, of course, since her husband signed the state law proclaiming this practice illegal. I’m sure Maria was in the hot seat at home with her husband and her kids after this little incident.

In case there are any more Marias out there, I wanted to share this quick and painless way to connect to a conference call while on your mobile phone. We share this little trick with our customers because we know that its a wireless world. Whether you are telecommuting, working flex hours, or collaborating with other time zones – our mobile devices are connecting us to conference calls and meetings.

Why I Love Meetings: Working From Home – Part 2

In my last post I wrote about how the daily commute not only wastes more than 100 hours of the average American’s year, but often creates stress that spills over at home.

I don’t know about you, but I despise waiting in line, especially when what I’m waiting in line for is a big, steaming bowl of more stress. Isn’t there something better we can do with our time?

Luckily, online meeting and conferencing technology is now letting thousands of workers, including yours truly, avoid the rush hour and the stress that accompanies it. Even working from home one day a week makes a big impact in my quality of life. It’s not bad for the environment either.

In 2005 it was reported that the average American spends over 100 hours in traffic delays every year. That’s more than the average two weeks (80 hours) of vacation most workers take each year.

A recent study in the New York Times shows the effects of this burnout and how it can spill over at home in the form of arguments, stress, and bad moods.

Time is the most precious commodity, isn’t it? Think what you would do if you could have that 100 hours back. Or even if you could simply avoid the burnout associated with the “rat race” commute. Could you spend more time with your family? Could you perform better at your job?

One of the keys to a successful meeting is a good slide presentation. When I design a presentation, I usually don’t give it much thought. I just pick an appropriate corporate template and go. But slides that are attractive and visually pleasing, not only provide a way to communicate quickly, accurately and effectively, but they keep your audience attentive and more receptive to your ideas. So when I stumbled upon some tips for improving my presentations, I knew immediately that I should share them with you.

Tweeting Our Meeting Love

What gets hundrends, sometimes thousands of references on Twitter each day?

No it’s not the latest badly behaving Hollywood celeb, it’s actually the conference call.

That’s right, hundreds of people tweeting various reactions to the very conference calls that they are attending. Here’s a quick sampling (names removed to protect the innocent):
- “just spent 70 minutes attending a webinar/conference call from my living room couch. Glad it’s over cause my cell phone is about to die!”
- “one conference call standing between me and the weekend”
- “These late night rehearsals are no good. What say we stay home & rehearse via conference call?”

Favorite Things: Look What’s on PGiTV

My daughter and I were watching her favorite television program yesterday. It is a show called Total Drama Island, a cartoon version of the television show, Survivor, complete with wacky characters, crazy elimination challenges and big prizes. Despite its silliness, the show is a great example of how the medium of television can be used to reinvent ideas to give them new purpose and function.

Today I learned my daughter thinks it would fun to have a bear living with us. Yes, we were playing the Favorites Game again. The question – “What is your favorite pet?”  Her answer – “A bear.” Okay, she was teasing me, just a little.
