It seems everyone is talking about it – H1N1. Daycares, schools and companies of all sizes have planned how they’ll keep a workforce together during a pandemic. Although reports of how severe it is vary widely, one thing is certain – the virus is widespread. Even obsessive use of hand sanitizer didn’t spare me from its reach.

Get rid of annoying backround noise in your calls

Have you ever hosted a conference call, only to be distracted by shuffling papers, typing, or any other distracting sound- even a barking dog?

The fastest solution is to simply “Mute All Lines” by pressing *96.   Individual users can press *6 to unmute their own lines  if they need to talk.

If what you are hearing is not background noise but static or an echo, you might need to to figure out whose line is causing the problem.  Simply have your participants unmute themselves one by one, until the problem line is identified.  Once the line with the bad connection has been identified, ask that person to disconnect and dial back in to your meeting. You may want to suggest dialing in from a land line rather than a cell phone, turning off the speakerphone, or picking up the handset rather than using a hands-free device.

Last  week, I was lucky enough to attend the 2009 Social Commerce Summit hosted by (PGI client) Bazaarvoice, right here in my hometown of Austin, Texas.

Just like at any ordinary meeting, I drew some random doodles, as did many others.  But how cool to see somebody creating meaningful public illustrations of the event as it happened -with much better handwriting.  Clearly, this was no ordinary meeting.

Do Not Call Them “Cartoons”

The graphic recordings that had everybody talking were the creations of Sunni Brown of BrightSpot Information Design, an Austin-based company specializing in visual thinking.  You might have seen her working and presenting at South by Southwest Interactive this year.

Can doodling during meetings help you stay focused and recall more information?  A recent study says it can.  Research shows doodlers recall 29% more than their non-doodling counterparts.

Better recall = better meetings

That’s the thinking behind this, our new Meet’n Doodle blog – a place to see and share meeting doodles from around the globe.  Are you now or have you ever been a Meet’n Doodler?  Graphically inclined?  Attentionally challenged?
